12.4 Industry Sector Organisations in Victoria

Aboriginal Tourism Australia (ATA)
The ATA is the peak body representing the interests of the indigenous tourism sector at a national level.

Australian Business Travel Association (ABTA)
The Australian Business Travel Association is a national organisation with chapters in each state, focused on business travel management. ABTA provides professional development and promotes best practice and networking. This includes exchanging new ideas with International Business Travel Association partners in 14 other countries around the world.

Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA)
AFTA is the official national body which represents the majority of travel agents in Australia, including retail outlets, industry organisations, hotels, wholesalers, and tour operators.

Australian Hotels and Hospitality Association (AHHA)
The AHHA represents hoteliers and the hospitality industry. The AHHA offers a variety of services including advice on legislative, regulatory, industrial, legal, economic and commercial issues. The AHHA's Accommodation division represents Melbourne's major hotels.

Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC)
ATEC is the national peak industry organisation which represents inbound tourism operators and suppliers including inbound tour operators, accommodation providers, attractions, airlines, cruise lines, transport and entertainment. ATEC lobbies government, provides marketing benefits and business advice, conducts workshops and facilitates the development of strong commercial relationships with distribution networks. ATEC was previously the Inbound Tour Operators' Association.

Bed and Breakfast Council of Victoria (BBCV)
The BBCV is the key industry organisation working on behalf of Bed and Breakfast operators in Victoria. BBCV is affiliated with the Australian Bed and Breakfast Council.

Bus Association Victoria Incorporated (BAV)
Bus Association Victoria Incorporated's core activities are industry representation and industry development on behalf of the bus and coach operators of Victoria.

Camping Association of Victoria (CAV)
The CAV provides information, resources, services and training to users, organisations and campsite operators. While the CAV covers all camping opportunities across Victoria, the focus is on group camping in built facilities.

Caravan Trades and Industry Association (CTIA)
The CTIA is the peak body for the caravanning and camping industry. CTIA works to raise the awareness and image of the caravanning and camping industry and to provide leadership and coordination to the industry.

Country Victoria Tourism Council (CVTC)
CVTC is the peak organisation representing local and regional tourism associations throughout country Victoria. The organisation's mission is to provide leadership, communication and marketing services to develop a professional and sustainable regional tourism industry.

In addition to its role as a representative voice for regional tourism, CVTC is a service provider for a number of initiatives on behalf of Tourism Victoria. These include the ongoing development of visitor information centres, the implementation of tourism signing programs, increasing local government awareness of and support for tourism, administering the RCMP for 11 of the 13 campaign regions, supporting the campaign committees in the development of their marketing plans and funding applications, coordinating a Victorian presence at selected trade and consumer shows, and developing and promoting appropriate regional events.

Cultural Tourism Industry Group (CTIG)
The Cultural Tourism Industry Group is the key industry group representing cultural tourism operators, attractions and businesses.

Ecotourism Association of Australia (EAA)
EAA is the peak national body for ecotourism accommodation, tour and attraction operators, tourism planners, protected area managers, academics and students, tourism, environmental, interpretation and training consultants; and local and regional tourism associations. The EAA's mission is to grow, consolidate and promote ecotourism and market the principles of sustainability to the whole tourism industry.

Farm and Country Tourism Victoria Incorporated (FACTV)
FACTV is the key industry organisation representing host farms, farm tourism operators, and the broader accommodation sector throughout Country Victoria. Affiliated with Australian Farm and Country Tourism.

Hotel, Motel and Accommodation Association of Victoria (HMAAV)
HMAA is the State's peak body representing all accommodation sectors of the industry, including providers of hotel, motel, motor inn and apartment accommodation.

(Licensed) Clubs Victoria Incorporated (CV)
Clubs Victoria is the industry association representing the interests of licensed clubs in Victoria.

Meetings Industry Association of Australia (MIAA)
The MIAA is a national body with members throughout Australia and Asia/Pacific region. Members of MIAA work in areas such as conference/event management, meetings planners working for associations, corporations and government, conference venues, hotels, attractions, audio visual/staging and conference suppliers.

Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau Ltd (MCVB)
MCVB is the peak organisation in Melbourne charged with increasing visitation and optimising the economic benefit for Melbourne from local, national and international meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, or Business Events. MCVB is responsible for uncovering potential business leads, collating the official bid and encouraging decision-makers to hold the business event in Melbourne. With the assistance and cooperation of the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre, the MCVB jointly funds two specialist international representatives in North America and Europe. MCVB is partially funded by Tourism Victoria with support from the private sector through membership and user-pays participation in marketing activities.

The MCVB has relinquished its regional tourism role to the newly formed Destination Melbourne Inc. to enable it to focus on its core business events role.

Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre (MCC)
Operates the Melbourne Convention Centre and the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The MECC works cooperatively with the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau on international convention business, and sources exhibition business internationally, nationally and locally.

Museums Australia Inc., Victoria (MA)
As the peak body for the museum industry, Museums Australia (Victoria) aims to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in ways which affirm the value of museums, stimulate debate about principles and standards and inform and inspire their staff, volunteers and supporters.

National Tourism Industry Alliance
NTIA is in its formative stages as an alliance of peak industry bodies in each state. The need for such an alliance was recognised following the demise of the Tourism Council Australia.

Professional Tour Guides Association of Australia (PTGAA)
The PTGA represents tour guides in Victoria, focusing on professional development and business networking for its members.

Regional Victoria Conference Group (RVCG)
RVCG is an industry funded membership based organisation of conference venues and affiliate service providers created to cooperatively promote regional conference opportunities, support members and lobby government. CVTC provides the secretariat for this group.

Restaurant and Caterers Association of Victoria (RCAV)
With an emphasis on promoting excellence within the hospitality industry, Restaurant and Catering Victoria represents restaurants, cafes, bars, reception centres, catering businesses, nightclubs and food service related businesses throughout metropolitan and regional Victoria. The RCAV also provides networking opportunities and lobbies government on issues relevant to the industry.

Tourism Accreditation Board of Victoria (TABV)
The TABV oversees the progressive development and implementation of accreditation and quality assurance programs. The Board has been independently structured with secretariat services provided by Tourism Training Victoria. TABV approves and monitors the continuous improvement of programs submitted by industry associations, ensures compliance with national guidelines and promotes tourism accreditation to the tourism industry and the consumer.

Tourism Task Force (TTF)
TTF is a national, apolitical lobby group representing the chief executives of the major corporations and institutions in Australia's tourism and transport industries.

Tourism Training Victoria (TTV)
Tourism Training Victoria (TTV) is the operating name of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Training Board of Victoria Inc. TTV provides advice on industry training needs, establishes training standards consistent with national guidelines, co-ordinates the development and implementation of new initiatives, develops training resources, provides advice to organisations to improve industry based training and promotes career opportunities to new entrants.

Victorian Accommodation Alliance (VAA)
VAA provides a shared secretariat for the Hotel, Motel and Accommodation Association of Victoria, the Bed and Breakfast Council of Victoria and Farm and Country Tourism Victoria.

Victorian Backpackers Operators Association (VBOA)
VBOA is the key organisation representing tourism operators in the Victorian backpacker industry.

Victorian Caravan Parks Association (VCPA)
The VCPA also represents caravan parks in Victoria. The VCPA aims to provide a range of services to its members, whilst aiding in the development and promotion of the caravan park industry in Victoria.

Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI)
VECCI's core activities are lobbying, commercial activities and the promotion of membership services. VECCI works to improve the environment for Victorian businesses, achieving broad success in taxation and regulation reform.

Victorian Major Events Company (VMEC)
VMEC actively targets and attracts events that can provide substantial economic impact and/or international profile for Melbourne and Victoria. It monitors all major international events and conducts feasibility studies on those which warrant further investigation.

Victorian Tourism Industry Group (VTIC)
The peak industry organisation in Victoria representing the member sector associations and supported by the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry. VTIC represents the industry to government, other business sectors and the media on State significant issues. VTIC is the leadership voice for the industry.

Victorian Tourism Operators Association
The Victorian Tourism Operators Association (VTOA) is the key industry association representing tour operators, attractions and other tourism businesses in the state. VTOA aims to contribute to the growth, profitability and professionalism of member enterprises through member benefits and services, professional development opportunities, advice to individual members and advocacy to government and industry on issues which impact upon member business development and commercial viability.

On behalf of Tourism Victoria, VTOA is also supporting the formation and ongoing development of an Aboriginal Tourism Association in Victoria, handling of tourism business enquiries through the implementation of the Industry Advisory Services Program, developing a publication to advise industry on pricing structures, assisting in the development of an effective adventure tourism industry in Victoria through the implementation of the Adventure Tourism Action Plan 2002-2004, and providing regular advice to Tourism Victoria on industry trends and issues.

Victorian Wineries Tourism Council (VWTC)
The VWTC is a ministerial appointed advisory committee providing advice to the Minister, Tourism Victoria and the industry on the development of food and wine tourism.

State Government

Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development. (DIIRD)
DIIRD is the State Government department with primary responsibility for economic development including regional economies and communities, developing industry and encouraging investment, developing Victoria's information and technology capabilities, and managing major infrastructure.

Department of Tourism, Sport and the Commonwealth Games (DTSCG)
DTSCG is responsible for promoting domestic and international tourism, and enhancing the opportunities presented by sport and recreation generally with a specific focus on the Commonwealth Games. Tourism Victoria operates as a statutory authority and business unit of the department and is well placed to integrate tourism into the State Government business and economic agenda. Other business units are Sport and Recreation Victoria and Commonwealth Games.

Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE)
NRE is responsible for strategic direction, policy and integrated management of Victoria's total public land estate, amounting to some 34% of the State. It provides direct management for recreation and tourism in State forest and coordinates the activities of other land managers such as Parks Victoria and Committees of Management. NRE also supports management of the Alpine Resorts and the work of the Alpine Resorts Coordinating Council.

Parks Victoria
Parks Victoria is the single largest tourism manager in the State with responsibility for the management and provision of facilities and services for Victoria's 36 national parks, as well as wilderness, state and regional parks, marine and coastal parks, thousands of reserves, hundreds of heritage properties and historic places and Melbourne's metropolitan parks. It is also responsible for visitor management of Port Phillip and Westernport Bays and the Lower Yarra, Maribyrnong and Patterson Rivers. These areas combined attract in excess of 36 million visits each year, contributing over $1 billion to the State's economy.

Department of Infrastructure (DOI)
DOI has several areas of responsibility which impact on tourism. These include improving public transport and road systems, implementing community capacity building strategies in rural areas, contributing to the delivery of sustainable and liveable communities and liaising with local government.

Arts Victoria
A division of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Arts Victoria is responsible for the implementation of the State Government's arts policy Making Victoria the Cultural Centre of Australia. The policy seeks to develop a vibrant and dynamic arts industry, and position Victoria as the cultural capital of Australia.

Global Tourism Organisations

Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA)
PATA is the recognised authority on Pacific Asia travel and tourism. PATA provides marketing, research and educational opportunities to a membership of government tourist offices, airlines, hotels, travel agencies, tour operators and related companies. PATA's mission is to enhance the growth, value and quality of Pacific Asia travel and tourism for the benefit of its membership.

World Tourism Organisation (WTO)
With its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, WTO is an inter-governmental body entrusted by the United Nations towards the promotion and development of tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how.

WTO's membership includes 139 countries and territories and more than 350 affiliate members representing local government, tourism associations and private sector companies, including airlines, hotel groups and tour operators.

Through tourism, WTO aims to stimulate economic growth and job creation, provide incentives for protecting the environment and heritage of destinations, and promote peace and understanding among all the nations of the world.

World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)
WTTC is the global business leaders' forum for travel and tourism. Its members are chief executives from all sectors of industry, including accommodation, catering, entertainment, recreation, transportation and other travel-related services.

Founded in April 1990, WTTC policies are set and implemented by a Member Executive Committee, a president and a small staff in London, with representative offices in North and South America, Asia/Pacific and Europe.
