Victoria's Spa and Wellness Tourism Action Plan 2005-2010

Message from the Minister

John Pandazopoulos MP

Victoria’s long-held reputation for offering world-class spa experiences will be enhanced with the Spa and Wellness Tourism Action Plan 2005-2010.

Australia’s first spa and wellness tourism action plan, highlights the State’s eagerness to grow this tourism sector. The Plan will pave the way over the next five years to bolster the appeal of Victoria ’s excellent new and existing spas.

Around the world there is a growing demand for spa and wellness experiences. Research also shows that there is a worldwide trend for a more holistic spa tourism experience which may even include activities such as yoga and Chinese medicine. The action plan will ensure that Victoria’s spa and wellness tourism offerings maximise their share of this high-yielding market.

Significant investment in new facilities in Melbourne and regional Victoria mean that we are well-placed to compete in this lucrative tourism sector.

While the Hepburn Springs and Daylesford regions have a long history as the destinations for health and well-being, there has been a proliferation of day spas throughout the State. Over the last five years, Melbourne has seen significant investment in spa retreats, many of which are located in hotels across the city. In regional Victoria, the number of spa and well-being facilities has also grown and these facilities offer a range of unique experiences such as traditional Japanese techniques, hot mineral springs and bed and breakfast packages.

There is no doubt that Victoria has what it takes to become the leading destination in Australia for spa and wellness tourism. The Spa and Wellness Tourism Action Plan 2005-2010 will help guide the industry to achieve this goal.
